What Is Spaying and Neutering?
Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) is the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus in female pets, while neutering (castration) is the removal of the testicles in male pets. Both are routine procedures performed under general anesthesia by experienced veterinary surgeons. Our Vancouver clinic uses strict protocols, sterile techniques, and advanced monitoring to keep pets safe and comfortable. Most recover within a few days with minimal restrictions.
Why Should You Spay or Neuter Your Pet?
Spay and neuter surgery has long-term benefits:
-
For female pets: Prevents unwanted litters, eliminates the risk of pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection), and greatly reduces the chance of mammary tumors.
-
For male pets: Prevents testicular cancer, lowers the risk of prostate disease, and reduces hormone-driven behaviors such as roaming, fighting, humping, and urine marking.
-
For the community: Sterilization helps reduce pet overpopulation in Vancouver, keeping more animals out of shelters and off the streets.
By choosing spay and neuter services, you’re investing in your pet’s health, reducing future medical costs, and helping improve animal welfare in our community.
Supporting the Community with TNR and Partnerships
We support Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs to humanely manage feral cat populations. Beach Avenue Animal Hospital also collaborates with local organizations like the Humane Society, the ASPCA, and Canadian groups such as the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (Humane Canada) to promote responsible pet ownership and improve animal welfare in our communities.
What to Expect: Before, During, and After Surgery
-
Before: A pre-surgical exam ensures your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia. In some cases, bloodwork is recommended. Pets must fast the night before.
-
During: Our veterinarians perform the procedure under anesthesia using sterile surgical techniques. Vital signs are continuously monitored by trained technicians.
-
After: You’ll receive clear recovery instructions, including incision care, pain management, and activity restrictions. Most pets resume normal activity within 2–3 days, with complete healing in 10–14 days.
If you ever have concerns during recovery, our Vancouver team is only a phone call away.
